putting on some tunes in FLA

After having some serious dance sessions to Katy Perry’s “Firework” while at Kripalu, I was reminded of how powerful an inspiring song can be. It takes you out of your ego instantly. It lifts you up.

For the past two years, I’ve become a big believer in having a positivity playlist. I created one after realizing that a couple of the songs on my iPod about breakups, anger and sadness were making me feel, well, lousy.

I hope that these songs make you smile. I hope that they remind you how powerful a piece of music can be.

Life is Wonderful- Jason Mraz

Learning to Fly- Kate Earl

Got My Mind Set on You- George Harrison

The Heart of the Matter- India Arie

Ooh Ahh- Grits

Fearless/Sparks Fly/Long Live- Taylor Swift (couldn’t resist!!)

All Dressed in Love- Jennifer Hudson (from SATC)

Imagine (cover)- Glee

Ever, Ever After- Jordin Pruitt (from Enchanted)

They- Jem

Gone- Johnson

Just the Way You Are- Bruno Mars

Let the Rain/Gonna Get Over You/Uncharted- Sara Bareilles

Got Your Back- T.I.

Just Say Yes- Snow Patrol

And if you like country:

What If It All Goes Right – Perhaps my all time favorite positive song

Happy Girl- Martina McBride

Toes- Zac Brown Band

A plug for peace from ET

The picture above is easily my favorite from my trip to Florida. Why? I like  what it whispers: Peace can be sassy, hip and all-around adorable.

A couple other candies for your body and soul:

On to-die-for brownies: Flourless Brownies recipe from Whole Foods. This recipe changed my dessert life; I’ve made it twice in the past four days.

On the importance of keeping things positive: “We are not a little powerful; we are enormously powerful. Every time we say a negative word, we lay the material plans for negative things. There is no escaping this law of the mind. As we think, so it shall be.” -Marianne Williamson

On natural scents: In days past, when I tried to wear regular perfume I worked very hard to pretend that I wasn’t sneezing like a crazy lady every three minutes. But I was. This past week I started putting on an aromatherapy oil every morning. My current scent is Ylang Ylang, and I must admit it’s good stuff.

I titled this post Crazy Sexy Life instead of “Crazy Sexy Cancer” because Kris Carr’s life really has nothing to do with cancer anymore. In fact, she’s so healthy she glows. Plus, Crazy Sexy Life is the name of her current stellar! website. If you’ve never heard of either phrase before, “Crazy Sexy Cancer” is a documentary film that came out in 2003 about Kris Carr’s battle with a rare form of vascular stage 4 cancer — five is the worst ‘o the worst.. At 31 and on VALENTINE’S DAY, Kris (then a successful actress) found herself in the midst of a crisis.

Chemo wasn’t standard treatment. The cancer had spread to too many areas; she was supposed to wait it out and see how it progressed. Kris boldly decided to tackle her cancer head on and make a documentary film about the process. And it’s INSPIRING. It’s sad too, but it’s wildly magical at the same time. Spoiler alert: She falls in love with her camera man. But it’s Kris’s spirit, her willingness to be goofy and honest about how cancer shapes her life that is so beautiful. She’s good, like “Oprah” good.

I highly recommend her Crazy Sexy Life website and newsletter. It’s the perfect place to be if you feel a bad mood hit you or you’re struggling to figure out your next step in life.

And I leave you with a couple quotes from Ms. Carr, that remind me yet again of the power of goal setting:

“In fact I still have the journal entry from 2003 that says, “Oprah, save a seat for me, I’m coming.”

“P.S. Take this one soul nugget from my journey to Oprah: Believe in your message, your magic, your shine. What are the Oprah opportunities in your life? Don’t block them. Being scared is natural. Shutting down your Goddess-given gifts is not. Be bold. Be brilliant. Show the world whatcha got.”

Netflix it people!

Positivity

yep, I'm pro Taylor

Lately, I’ve been trying to notice what really gets me amped up, excited and genuinely passionate about life. Instead of surrounding myself with these things as a defensive maneuver, I’m being more proactive. In other words, I don’t wait until I have a bad day at work to make yoga a priority. As soon as I feel a negative emotion like “poor me” or “things are not working out,” I work to re-program that thought to a more positive place right away before it really zaps me. Here are a few tools that I frequently turn to (and why they inspire me):

“The Secret”–  (DVD or book!) for helping me see the world as a magical place that I get to create daily.

“Eat.Pray.Love.”- for inspiring me to trust my journey.

TUT “Notes from the Universe”– for reminding me each morning that thoughts become things.

Yoga– for teaching me how to breathe and learning what letting go feels like. And for slowing me down.

Taylor Swift– for having the courage to sing her diary out loud.

Donna Eden’s “Energy Medicine” – for helping me understand energy work is accessible and a super-valuable tool.

Teachers. Mentors. Spirit guides. Angels– who come in all forms and are with us all day, every day…if we allow ourselves to believe so.

How do you start your day?

Positivity, quotes mcgotes

Someday, I hope to be telling you how I get up bright and early to go to yoga classes, or for a nice long walk. I’m not quite there yet, but that’s one of my goals. It helps to say that out loud, to internet world — one more way to keep myself accountable.

Until then, I’d like to share the blog I’ve been reading every morning while I eat my oatmeal and Craisins: The Daily Love. It helps me start my day off on the right foot, and I feel like the posts are juuuust right. Not too long, not too preachy, not too unrealistic. Technically, The Daily Love was built as an email service; so you can sign up that way too.

Here are a few qouteables from recent topics:

“NO WONDER IT DIDN’T WORK OUT. I was investing in my idea of who I wanted someone to be. Talk about an incorrect spiritual equation. Love Loves people right where they are.”

“Give Love room to step in and help guide you. When you do this, you will be led to the strangest and most beautiful of places. Some people will leave your life; new ones will come. You may be fired, or feel called to quit your job. You may realize you are not in a Loving relationship. Whatever it may be, whatever you feel Love is guiding you to do, jump in.”

” I began to wonder why it’s so much easier to “trust” an unseen satellite to get us to our destination [GPS] than it is to trust the infinite intelligence of the Universe to fulfill our dreams.”

iPhone, Positivity

Future plans: I definitely want a photo wall in my apartment/house some day. Here's the one my boss has in her's, jealous!

I’m also slowly, but surely adding more apps to my iPhone and snapped a few shots of Grace with Instagram this weekend. Check out their Tumblr page. It’s similar to Hipstamatic, and you can choose from a ton of great lens’.

Gracie Bell (nickname courtesy of the FNL fans in my house)

My other internet pieces of interest:

Great advice from Julianna Baggott on  “Chick Lit is not Dead”

Quit. The Art of Quitting is a beautiful and crucial thing to master. Saying no to one stupid thing that you actually kind of hate is saying yes to the possibility of something you love. (I include bad relationships, bad jobs, goals that were forced on you instead of coming up from within.) Sometimes you shouldn’t stick it out. You should give up. You should say die – so some other part of you can come alive.

Another good little nugget from Deepak Chopra’s blog, “Be Who You Are” on why you shouldn’t be who “everyone” else wants you to be…

“Start now and say yes to your visions, to the purpose you were born for, whatever that is, however humble or foolish. You were given gifts for a reason. Honor them by using them and when someone else says you are a fool, just smile.”

The Four Agreements

Grounded, Positivity, Yoga

woman_doing_yoga2Everyday we make certain choices.  Yoga has taught me to be more conscious of those choices, and in turn, my thoughts.  It has taught me that so often we live in our heads. We let our worries win; we let our fears take control. I’ve read several books about the way we think, and the most recent book I finished was about the Four Agreements.

They are–

1.) Be Impeccable with Your Word

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2.) Don’t take anything personally

Nothing others say or do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3.) Don’t make assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama.

4.) Always do your best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

I first found the four agreements in the funeral program of one of my mother’s close friends.  Kayla fearlessly battled ovarian cancer, and sadly lost her fight earlier this year.  Her daughter wrote in the program that she was struggling to find the words to describe the way her mother lived and how she loved.  Then she found the four agreements taped to her mother’s fridge (in addition to the five principles of Reiki and yoga commitments)  and knew that these things were the right words.

As with so many of these “yoga-y” spiritual books or ideas, I firmly believe that these ideas speak to some and not others…may be meaningful to me, but not you.  So I throw the four agreements out in front of you- see if they take.

The Four Agreements book is written by Don Miguel Ruiz.
