Adrienne gets the credit for this one…as she should.  She also recommended Lisa See’s book titled, “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” a few years ago. I liked that book because the writing was detailed, vivid and original.  But I loved that book because it was the story of how a friendship survived unhappy marriages, cruel fights, gossip and pain.  From what I’ve read at this point, “Shanghai Girls” doesn’t live up to my memory of “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” but I’ m not that far into the book either.  The plot is definitely windy–and unique.  The characters are lovable, and the suspense feels meaningful.  And yesterday a woman on the commuter rail stopped me and said, “That book is just amazing.  You will love it.” Here’s hoping she’s right.
